Faery Fun Stuff

I love the talismans created by my good friend Storm Eldermoon. You can use these as true talismans, or wear them as object d'art pins. This one is a faery looking off into the distance.

You can get one of Storm's collectible mini masterpieces on ebay, or you can try to win the one pictured here from me. Also included are two bookmarks and more goody bags, one for you to keep and the other to gift to a special friend. :-)

Reviews both good, better...and ouch

Every author gets bad reviews now and then, just like we get rejections, the dreaded R's when we send out query letters, proposals, partials, and fulls (manuscript requests)*. It's a part of the business and eventually if you stick around long enough, you'll notice your skin gets a little thicker with every project you send out, every book you publish. Because not everyone will like what you write. Likewise, there will come times when you'll get a rave review or two and your grin will curve higher than the clouds. Savor those moments of pride and giddiness. Blog and tell your friends, post it on FB and Twitter. That way you can always go back and reread those little sugar cubes of happiness when the world drops out from under you when you get a truly snarky review.

Whether the bad review comes from an established review site or from a reader/reviewer/blogger, it still stings. The best thing you can do is shrug it off and keep writing. Remember, everyone has an opinion.

Until next time...

Substitute Plan

Since I had kidney stones on my birthday and my guy had stomach flu at the same time, we decided to celebrate my birthday this last Sunday. He took me to see True Grit. Okay, it's a known fact I really don't like westerns. Not in books, movies, or video games. However, True Grit is a classic and it got rave reviews. Plus I had to see if Jeff Bridges could fill the rather big boots of John Wayne. He did. And then some. This may be the very first western I've ever liked. It came across as real and authentic. A true piece of Americana. I would recommend everyone see this movie—even people like me who don't like westerns. It's that good.

The theater we went to is this huge place with all sorts of maze-like hallways and dozens of theater rooms. Of course the movie was playing in the very last theater in the back. So I grabbed the seats while my guy got the popcorn and drinks. The line wrapped half-way across the lobby, it was unreal. On the way out, after the movie, we stopped by the concession to get our refills on popcorn and drinks, since at those prices you want to get your monies worth. It was while in the line that my guy snapped this pic of a young woman with what looked like giant curlers in her hair. On closer inspection, we realized they were coke cans. Honest. I hope this is not a new fad or trend among our youth. ::shakes head::

Although I did love her friend's jacket. Looks like a shark. lol. I may have to see if anyone in SL can make a jacket like that for me, since I am Cassandra Sharktooth in SL. :P

Until next time...

And we were just talking about Michelle Pfeiffer...

The other evening while Cora and I were skin shopping in SL, we decided one of the new skins and shapes I'd bought resembled a tanned Michelle Pfeiffer.

Recalling her in the role of Catwoman, I decided there are worse actresses to mimic. But it is an odd coincidence, since I learned today that she is going to be in the Tim Burton remake of Dark Shadows! She's playing...get this...
Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the matriarch from the show, played originally by screen legend Joan Bennett. Wild huh?

The Toys of Childhood

The other night I chatted with critique partner and bff Cora Zane and somehow we got on the subject of the toys from our childhood and she directed me to a link on eBay where a Strawberry Shortcake house was selling for over $400.00! I gulped. I never had a Strawberry Shortcake house (not my generation), but it got me wondering what happened to all my childhood toys and how much some of them might be worth now.

I remember having this exact case and for the life of me, I haven't a clue what happened to it. When I was a kid, we moved around so much, I'm sure it wound up at some far flung garage or yard sale a few decades ago.

With a little searching on the internet, I was able to find a few other of my former prized possessions—like this Chatty Cathy doll. When this came out, it was so cool that you could have a talking dolly. All the girls in school wanted one. I remember breaking the string and crying my heart out, fingers crossed my dad could fix it for me. And he did. :-) When I last saw her, I think we were living in Oceanside, California. That would have been maybe '66 or '67. Soon after that we moved to Niagara Falls, NY I think, or maybe that was when we moved to Plant City, Florida. We moved so many times and so many places, my childhood is a bit of a blur. Which is why I don't have many toys from my childhood still with me. ::sigh::

I wasn't all about the dolls though, I loved just about everything I ever got. I recall this Easy Curl machine. My oldest sister (the beautician) got me this for my eighth or ninth birthday. I thought I was ALL THAT, with my fancy do. :p

And then there were pop beads. Remember those? You could snap them on and pop them off to change the color pattern on your little necklace. Nowadays they would be banned as a choking hazard, but maybe we were just smarter back then, because I never thought to chew on them. That was what the ends of my ponytails were for! :munch: lol.

I remember my older sisters playing Twister with their friends and I wanted to play too. When they got too old to play and disinterested in the game, I inherited it as a hand-me-down. Lots of rainy weekends were passed by playing Twister with my friends. Good memories.

And then, there were the toys you loved to hate, or at least I did. These monkeys were ebils! lol. No matter how hard I tried the silly damn things never hooked together. grrr. I think they were made to teach kids how to deal with frustration. If so, then I failed. Most often they were left on the carpet in the living room and later sucked up by my mum's vacuum cleaner. Even so, they somehow always managed to show up on my dresser. ugh. Same thing with the old Colorforms. Remember those? They were a vacuum cleaner magnet, I swear. lol.

I think every girl and even some boys got one of these beauties. My Easy-Bake Oven was mustard yellow and cooked the most gawd-awful cupcakes. But it didn't matter, I was proud of those little cakes. I made them all by myself. So what if I got belly-aches later... lol.

But my favorite of all toys was actually like magic. The Etch-A-Sketch was so awesome to my little brain. I couldn't understand how or why the knobs made the black stuff wiggle and move into shapes I could control. The tablet was a source of mystery and magic and I adored it. I know one thing, it made the cross-country trips in the backseat of mum and dad's car speed by. :-)

What were some of toys from your childhood? Do you still have any of them?

Until next time...

Dreaming in Chocolate

Woke up this a.m. and first thing I do is start the coffee maker and then sit down to take my blood sugar. Being a diabetic, I'm always concerned about any spikes in my sugar levels. This morning it was the lowest it's been for a while, 102. The normal range is 80-120. I wasn't so low I was on the verge of fainting, but still 102 is low for me since I usually hug the 120 mark or higher, especially if I've been indulging in fast food.

Chocolate is usually a no-no, due to the sugar content, but I noticed something, an odd pattern in my levels. Every time I eat a couple of small pieces of dark chocolate, my sugar levels are lower the next day. What is up with that? Yesterday, I tested out my theory again, and today the glucose meter read 102. Go figure. Now, if it had been 170, I'd say the other times this happened, it was a fluke. But nope. So I'm looking at research online to see if there is any scientific validity to my personal findings.

If there is, then I may have to 'force' myself to eat dark chocolate every day. lol. Life is a hardship, but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. :D

Oh and I recently came up with a new 'lol' type thing. It's lwp. I hope it catches on. If anyone tags it correctly and knows what it means, post a comment here on my blog and I'll enter you into a contest for a free ebook from my backlist.
Your choice. (contest ends February 20 at midnight).

Until next time...

Last Night's Storytelling Fun

Cassandra Curtis at Reading Event 2/9/11
These pics were taken by bff and crit partner Cora Zane last night at my Storytelling With Cassandra event in SL. I loved that we had the event underwater at the Elementals Mall in Meleda. I could swim there and shop forever! Just so much to do and to see!

I was way stoked to find out a dragon showed up to the event. Next to mermaids and all things aquatic, dragons (and wolfies) are my second favorite things. :)

My next Storytelling with Cassandra event will be on February 23, 2011 at 6-7pm SLT, same location. I'll read from the second and third stories in my Shifting Tides trilogy, Song of The Sea and Soul of The Sea. These stories are very sexy, racy, and not watered down, pun intended. lol. So mature audience only, okay? Also I'll have a special surprise for the attendees at my next event, so I hope to see you there!

Until next time...

Soda Pop With a Pump

Last holiday season I wasn't overly festive. I just wanted to get the holidays and the gift shopping over with, so I made a quick list and dashed out to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to pick up a present for both of us, for the house. It's my way of being practical and frugal. Trust me, it doesn't last long. lol.

Anyway, what I finally decided on was something called a Sodastream machine.
<---This is the model I bought. I think it's the cheapest one, but it seems to hold together well. The soda maker came with a box of sampler flavors and one carbonation canister. We managed to go through the sampler flavors pretty quick, so I was glad I'd thought to buy a few of the refill bottles in flavors I knew we like: cola, ginger ale, orange.

At the time, I also decided to buy a two pack of the one-liter bottles, even though it comes with two in the starter box. As it turns out, my guy likes the diet cola and I liked the ginger ale (More like Canada Dry, only less sweet), so we used the extra two bottles for the Sodastream knock-off of Sierra Mist, which they call Fountain Mist (but tastes more like a combination of Mountain Dew and Sierra Mist to us), and the diet orange (which is like a stronger version of Sunkist orange soda). I highly recommend using 'flavor dedicated' liter bottles, because we tried refilling one of the diet cola bottles with the diet orange. We rinsed it very well, but the aftertaste was not pleasant. lol. And since you can't sterilize the bottles in a dishwasher, it's better to rinse them very well after each use, but also keep the same flavor in the bottle every time.

We keep the liter bottles nice and cold in the refrigerator and pull them as needed. There are over 20 flavors to choose from I believe, but I know my local BB&D only carries a handful of the company's variety.

One of the main reasons I love this product has nothing to do with cost-savings or the environment. This is why I love my Sodastream: Last night was bitter cold, very windy, and drizzling sleet.

We had the fireplace on and blankets wrapped around us. I got up to get the liter bottle and it was empty. In the past, I'd have to check the pantry and hope we'd have another bottle in there, and more often than not, we didn't because my Bear used to go through about 3 cases of soft drinks in a week. I'd go reach for a can, and my hand would disappear inside an empty cardboard case.

I never get a warning, nothing like, "hon can you pick up a case of cola 'cause we're out." I always find out the hard way—when I'm thirsty and want another drink. And then one of us (usually me) would get the pleasure of running to the nearest convenience store (like having to leave your home at 11pm and drive in ice and sleet is convenient?).

Well, last night it happened again, but this time I simply got up and walked into my kitchen, rinsed out my liter bottle of diet ginger ale, and within 2-3 minutes had a full liter of freshly made ginger ale. Sorry, didn't mean to come across like an advertisement for the product, but I really do like it, and we are saving money over all by having the Sodastream.

So while it may save you money and may even be good for the environment, what I love is the convenience...and the excuse to run over to BB&D once a month to get a new flavor bottle...and anything else that catches my fancy. *shopPing luSt* lol.

Here, there, and everywhere in a burst

To anyone who attempted to attend my reading event, I sincerely apologize if you couldn't find it. There were a few last minute changes of the venue, and I tried best as I could to send out the latest notices in my groups and include the most up to the minute landmarks. But as the saying goes, shit happens. lol. Still, though, I think the reading went pretty well once I got started. And I only stumbled about 8 or 9 times, which is a bit of an improvement. :P

After the event, I set my alarm and did some micro burst writing. The micro burst writing is a timed writing session lasting only 10 minutes. After the ten minutes, you count your words and go again. I did three 10 minute sessions and saw an improvement after each writing burst (108 wc, 125 wc, 140 wc).

In these burst sessions I'm going more for stream of consciousness. When I do the longer timed writings, I'm looking at hitting all my scenes and plot points. The thing I've noticed is I cannot do the burst sessions with other authors. It simply doesn't work as well for me for some reason. But I highly recommend the longer timed writings when a group of authors get together. We push and motivate each other, and afterward we read part of what we wrote in order to get immediate feedback. That's the bonus.

I only wish I had more time to devote to the timed writings, but life always catches me unawares and slaps me upside the head. Life=the universe=fate=the current shit I am knee-deep in. Seriously. lol.

At least I managed to update the MMC blog and website this morning. Yee-haw! Go check it out: http://midnightmooncafe.blogspot.com
http://midnightmooncafe.com

I am totally jealous of authors who have friends and fans who do such menial chores for them. Must be nice. Maybe once I get my big girl panties on, I'll convince one of my cousins to help me out in their spare time. And don't you dare tell me you don't have any 'spare' time. I know better! lol.

Well, that's it for now. I need to go show my 'face' at Facebook and Twitter, then start on the never-ending pile of bills I collect. I swears they gather worse than dust bunnies! lol

Until next time...
