The Beauty and The Beast Trope in Romance

Anyone who hasn’t read Beauty and the Beast or a rendition of it, raise your hand.  Anyone?  I thought so.  If you’re hanging out here at my blog or on my FB author page, it’s probably a good guess you like this tale in its many forms as much as I do.

Basic premise of the story—hot girl falls for an anger management reject, ugly monster of a guy who isn’t really ugly. He’s just in disguise via a curse.  Love him enough and he changes back to his handsome self.  We end up with hot girl in love with hot prince of a guy. Happy ending for everyone.

Now let’s get to the blood and guts of the idea.  I have a bit of a problem with that short summation.  Why?  Well, let’s look at the origin of the curse.

The story as told by Villeneuve and de Beaumont vary in some details from each other, but I think most of us remember it as the Prince basically being an asshole to a poor old lady and not offering her shelter in story when she begged him.  If the idea of loving the beast who was actually a man didn’t hammer home the idea that looks can be deceiving, then you weren’t paying attention to this first volley.  The old lady isn’t just the average crone in rags.  A few choice words from her, some bad juju, and the prince is no longer God’s gift to the fairer (and ~cough~ superior  ~cough~) sex.  Lesson? Be careful who you piss off.

I’m good with this part.  It’s the not so subtle part of the story that says “Don’t be a dick.”  Now let’s get into the more tangled bit of it.  With time, maturity and bucket-loads of angst (love this stuff) the Beast/prince becomes a gentler, more empathetic being, possessing an internal beauty matched by the outer handsomeness he once had and lost due his cruelty and narcissism.  The reward for his redemption—and for Beauty’s exceptional discernment—is to change back to his handsome self.

Hey, I’d be the last person to say I can’t appreciate the physical beauty of anyone, man or woman.  I’d love to be a hot babe myself.  Still, after years of torment, of isolation and soul-searching, doesn’t being turned back into your hard body self seem a shallow reward for all that effort?  Or…is this really the prince’s reward?  Maybe it’s Beauty’s reward for seeing beyond the grotesque to the beauty within?  Personally, I think she gets the short end of the stick with this.  I’d be a little freaked out myself at having fallen in love with the ugly guy and suddenly be presented with some stranger before me, no matter how much of a babe he might be. I have more ideas about this, but I’m curious as to yours.  Care to share?

What if the Beast doesn’t change at the end (a la Shrek)?  Does the story lose its essence?  Its redemptive quality?  If so, how?  If not, why?

Last but not least, why do you think this tale has such huge appeal?  Its romanticism?  Its morality?  Its hope and acknowledgement that we can all find it within ourselves to be the Beast redeemed or Beauty with her gracious, far-seeing soul?
If you like the Beauty and the Beast romantic trope and have some book suggestions for me, please leave them in the comments. I’m going to be shoring up my TBR pile next week.
As always, In love and light...

Tuesday Blue Plate Special: Irresistibly Delicious

When Midnight Comes welcomes guest author Debra Ann Fisk. Her most recent book certainly is delicious, and wait until you prepare and taste her recipe, omg—so good.

Irresistibly Delicious is set at a bed and breakfast in Cozy Cove, Florida. This recipe is from the setting of the Cozy Cove Inn where many wonderful meals were prepared by the heroine Olivia.

I have been working on the sequel to Irresistibly Delicious and although the sequel takes place in the same town, it's quite different. One thing that is consistent is the cooking and good food served at the Cozy Cove Inn.

One feisty Southern chef. One sexy city doctor. One thousand miles apart. Trauma draws them together, but will circumstances pull them apart? Chef Olivia Carson's painful past haunted her until she discovered the healing solace at the Cozy Cove Inn.

She fell in love with the bed and breakfast and its owner, Myra. But her world is rocked to its core after Myra has a life threatening emergency. When Brady Matthews, Myra's son and a well-known cardiologist in NYC, shows up to care for his mother sparks fly in more ways than one.

Olivia and Brady disagree about everything, all the while fighting the sexual attraction that draws them together.

As Brady begins to reevaluate his life and Olivia creates a new career for herself, the risk of scandal and past secrets threatens to rip them apart. Will a headstrong surgeon and a gourmet chef learn to accept love? Or will they choose professional success with a side order of loneliness?

Tuesday Blue Plate Special: Outlander

Quite a while back, I was browsing in a bookshop, waiting for my car to be repaired, and spied something intriguing. I've always loved time travel romances and anything set during the WW2 era, so when I saw this book that seemed to combine the two, I wanted to see if anyone else had read it. The girl working behind the counter said it was a truly amazing novel, and I should try it. Good enough for me.

So I bought this oddly named book, Outlander, and rubbed my fingers over the slightly embossed thistle and crown on the cover. Since I'm also part Scots on my mum's side, I thought it might be fun to read something of the history of Scotland set to fiction.

I had no real expectations, despite the girl at the bookshop saying it was amazing. I'd been told that before, only to realize my taste in reading and other readers tastes can vastly differ.

To say I was floored by this epic story was an understatement. Only three times in my life have I read something that affected me so profoundly (Stranger In A Strange Land, and The Power of One). This work of fiction touched my soul, and I knew I would read the book again and again, in some special kind of literary pilgrimage. My old copy is so beat up, dog-earred, and the spine so cracked, anyone could tell at a glance it was a well read and loved up book.

A few years ago, I bought Outlander in ebook format to reread. It's just as great a story, but I admit something was lost in the feel of a real book in my hands, so I bought it again in paperback.

In celebration of one of my favorite books of all time (and the ever delicious Jaime Fraser) plus the new Starz mini series coming this month, I'm sharing some Scottish recipes today, both old and new.

Enjoy!

Grandda's Scottish Shortbread

Ingredients:

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup pure cane sugar
pinch of sea salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).

In mixing bowl, place butter, salt, and sugar then mix on medium speed until well blended. Add flour and change setting to slow, mixing thoroughly.

Press thickened dough batter into a rectangular pan/jelly roll size. Prick cookie dough repeatedly (close together) with a fork making sure the fork hits bottom.

Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 300ยบ degrees and continue to bake for 40 additional minutes. Let cool for a few minutes, then cut shortbread into two inch long bars. Let cool to room temperature, then place on decorative tray or in treat bags or cookie jar. Servings 12.

Oasis series, book one

Do not revive without authorization. Those were the words stamped on the cryo tube holding the prisoner. Lilly gazed at the prisoner and sensed the rage and frustration within him. Yet she tied her fate to his when their ship was attacked. Chased by Ravigans across the universe, she had no choice put to put her trust in Phoenix. But how was he able to penetrate her mind, filling it with teasing suggestions and sensual images, when that talent had always belonged exclusively to the generations of grey-eyed women in her line? Was the devil with the silver gaze the key to saving her beloved planet of Oasis, or just a common criminal out to take for himself whatever he could get his hands on?

Summer book bag giveaway!

While a lot of other authors will be at RWA having fun this week, I'll be at home writing and editing and making my own fun with ya'll, stuffing random goodies in two separate book bags for summer giveaways. Each day from now until July 31st, I'll be stuffing an item into each bag. Knowing me, it could be anything—anything at all...mwahahaha... Sorry, got carried away a bit there. lol So watch for blog updates throughout the rest of the month, also on my Facebook author page and on my Twitter feed for clues as to what's in the bags, because on August 1st, I'll be inviting ya'll to tell me what's in the bags and the person who comes closest wins that bag!  Keep in mind, although some items may be identical in each bag, not all items will be the same (that would be too easy, lol). Hint: Many of the drop items may not have any connection to the famous book pictured on each bag.

Ready to start gathering clues? Remember, don't guess until after all items are in the bag (an item a day until July 31st, 2013).

Book Bag 1 is the ever quirky and comically delightful Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, seen below.

The first clue to the first item dropped into the Catch 22 book bag:
A funny snaffu you must see

Book Bag 2 is the lovable classic from Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book, seen below.

The first clue to the first item dropped into the Jungle Book, book bag:
Mowgli and Baloo are stuck near you.

Item drop ends July 31. Deadline for contest guesses, ends midnight, August 3, 2013. Winner will be drawn and announced on my blog  August 4-5, 2013. Void where prohibited by law. Odds of winning dependent on number of entries. Two (2) prizes to be awarded of equal value, to 2 separate winners. Not responsible for lost or stolen mail. It is the winner(s) responsibility to respond to winning prize notifications and/or announcements. Winners must contact either myself or my assistant with snail mail information within 30 days of prize official winning announcement on my blog, to claim prize or prize is forfeit. Any forfeited prize is eligible for a second chance drawing or other contest at my choosing. Must be 18yrs+ to be eligible to win. Contest for U.S. residents only.

Waiting Not So Patiently For An Upcoming Book

Are there any books in a series that you've been waiting forever to read? Cue *SQUEE fan girl* moment here, as I share some exciting info about a couple of series books  and sequels I've been waiting forever to read. Okay it only seems like forever because I have mad love for the authors and their writing.

First up is the fifth book in Elizabeth Bear's Promethean series, One-Eyed Jack and The Suicide King. The release date is November 6, 2013, been waiting on this and happy 2013 is finally here. Only six months left to go, wooyah!

Published by Prime Books, One-Eyed Jack and The Suicide King can also be read as a stand alone book.

Don't ya'll just love that cover? So cool!

About the book:

The One-Eyed Jack and the Suicide King personifies the city of Las Vegas - its history, mystery, mystical power, and heart! When the Suicide King vanishes - possibly killed - in the middle of a magic-rights turf war started by the avatars of Los Angeles, a notorious fictional assassin, and the mutilated ghost of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel - his partner, the One-Eyed Jack, must seek the aid of a bizarre band of legendary and undead allies: the ghosts of Doc Holliday and John Henry the steel-driving man; the echoes of several imaginary super spies, decades displaced in time; and a vampire named Tribute, who bears a striking resemblance to a certain long-lost icon of popular music.

Other books in this series include:

Blood and Iron (June 2006, ROC)
Whiskey and Water (July 2007, ROC)
The Stratford Man: Volume I: Ink and Steel (July 2008, ROC); Volume II: Hell and Earth (August 2008, ROC)

Another book on my Please Can I Have Another list is author Kristen Painter's next book in her acclaimed House of Comarrรฉ series, Last Blood.  Also the fifth book in her series.

#5 – LAST BLOOD
Gothic Urban Fantasy
Release date: July 2013
 About the book:
Retribution is a gift…

In the final showdown between the forces of dark and light, Mal and Chrysabelle face not only Tatiana, but the ancient evil that now controls her: the Castus Sanguis. Chrysabelle gathers her friends and family around her, forming a plan to bring an end to the chaos surrounding them. But the Castus is the most powerful being they’ve ever come up against. Defeating such evil will require a great sacrifice from someone on the side of light.

One of them will change sides. One of them will die. No one will survive unscathed. Can Chrysabelle save those she cares about or will that love get her killed? What price is she willing to pay to draw last blood?

Other books in this series include:

Blood Rights (October 2011/Orbit)
Flesh And Blood (November 2011/Orbit)
Bad Blood (December 2011/Orbit)
Out For Blood (October 2012/Orbit)

I do have some good news for anxious HOC fans, Kristen's novella prequel will be out tomorrow, May 15th!  Sweet! Check it out:

Set in the world of the House of Comarrรฉ, Kristen Painter gives us a new novella about the price of freedom.

Maris’s life as a comarrรฉ has come down to three options: escape her patron and spend the rest of her days looking over her shoulder, fight him for her freedom with the understanding it could mean her death or undergo dangerous experimentation to transform her blood into something even more powerful.

Before she can make a decision, she discovers the vampire who’s been charged with sunproofing her blood isn’t so fond of her patron either. In fact, Dominic is unlike any vampire she’s ever met, but is she desperate enough to put her trust in another noble? Her heart says yes…

Games Zombies Play

I admit, I have a soft spot for zombies...and I'm sure that's the first place they'd go for in the event of a real zombie invasion. lol.  My guy has the game series and is a huge fan of the movies, plus he's gaga over anything 3D, including model turned actress Milla Jovovich, so of course this weekend, we went to see the latest in the Resident Evil movie franchise, Resident Evil: Retribution 3D.

Watch the trailer: http://www.residentevil-movie.com/site/

In this fifth installment, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella's most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

As zombie movies go, it had all the usual suspects: zombies chasing gun wielding actors, shoot-outs, eating brains and various other assorted body parts, car chases and lots and lots of gore. What it didn't have was any emotion to the plot. Forgive me in advance for the pun, but the acting and the story felt very...dead. The CGI was outstanding and the make-up effects were wonderfully gruesome. The stunts were phenomenal. But it lacked something, an emotional content, or maybe I'm asking for too much? All I know is the best part (in my opinion) was the last 10 minutes of the movie. And nope, no spoilers here. But unless you're a hard and fast fan of the movie series and the games (like my guy, who loved the 3D movie), I'd wait to see this as a Redbox rental.

If you love zombies and want to rent a few of my personal favs, check out the following flicks at your local Redbox.

In no certain order: Zombieland, Dead Alive, The Serpent and The Rainbow, Return of The Living Dead, Re-Animator, Shaun of The Dead, Day of The Dead, Dawn of The Dead,Night of The Living Dead, and finally 28 Days Later (okay some might say this is technically not a zombie flick, but it rawks, so I'm including it).

Later ya'll,
Cass

Keeping Motivated

I know one of the hardest things to do as a writer is to stay motivated. I think this is doubly hard if you are also disabled. Nothing is easy and nothing can be taken for granted when you have disability. Just finished reading one of the most inspiring, poignant, heart rending books. The collection is a mish mash of essays and poems, all connected through the voices of disabled women writers. The message is one of empowerment built on the back of physical and emotional pain. It's strident, in turns angry and loving, reflective and impulsive, and viewed solely from a feminine view. And by God it should be!  The women in this anthology have something to say and it's worth hearing.
