SHADOW FIRES

Catherine Spangler

Jenna dan Aron, a Shielder, lives a solitary existence, shunned by her people because she has visions and can see the future. She’s even foreseen her own destiny: to be a human offering, a mate for a savage Leor warlord.

When two Shielder colonies need to be rescued, the Leors who are their only hope demand a bride for their leader in return. Knowing she can’t deny fate, Jenna steps forward.

The Leors are a hybrid race and only part human. Arion of Saura finds mating outside his race abhorrent, but he has no choice, as his kind faces extinction. His life is ruled by hard logic and physical prowess, with no room for softness or emotion. Bound to him, Jenna faces a life of barbarism with a mate who seems more beast than man. In the relentless heat of the wild Sauran desert, Jenna and Arion wage a battle of wills, until they discover that the heart is mightier than any weapon—and that love can forge shadow and fire together.

I've long been a fan of the Shielder series from Ms. Spangler, so my expectations were pretty high.

I read the first page with my fingers crossed that I wouldn't be disappointed, and I wasn't. With incredibly deft handling, Ms. Spangler managed to make the reader feel every emotion Jenna had, all the worry, trepidation, and the sadness. Once on Saura, Jenna had to battle her dislike and mistrust, but you could see the budding romance to come, all in the subtle details. Each chapter moved the story forward, providing glimpses into each of the main character's state of mind.

The hero, Arion is formidable at first, even a little scary in true alpha fashion, but soon we learn he's made of more than sheer muscle and arrogance.

I won't give away spoilers, but I can promise lovers of SFR and Ms. Spangler will cheer when they finish Shadow Fires. I know I did. Is it too early to rub my hands together in anticipation for book six in the series?* ;)

*Please note that an ARC of this book was provided free of cost for review, but in no way influences my opinion. Honestly, few things do. Just ask Bear. lol

When Tessie King inherited the Royal Palace Hotel, Lake Tahoe's biggest resort, she inherited a cranky board of directors along with it. A board that is demanding higher revenues, or Tessie's out. Faced with the possibility of losing her father's legacy, Tessie turns to her staff to help her come up with a plan: film the season finale of Battle Buffet, the hottest cooking competition show on TV, at the resort. It's a scheme sure to bring in the big bucks.

But is also brings big trouble. When one of the casino's wealthiest clients is found dead on the gaming floor, and the killer comes up incognito on the security footage, everyone is a suspect—from the television crew to the blue haired retirees at the slots. Tessie teams up with her stepmother-turned-BFF and her snowboarding teenage crush in a race against the clock to repair the casino's reputation, dodge mob accusations from the hot FBI agent on the case, and track down a killer before any more of her big spenders end up sleeping with the fishes.
Love the Tahoe Tessie series and have Hey Big Spender on order. The book sounds like my kind of fun whodunnit romp.

Hot eBook Fun - MetalMark by Ella Drake

MetalMark by Ella Drake

I love SFR (Science Fiction Romance) having cut my teeth on authors like Ursula K. LeGuin, C.J. Cherryh, Sharon Green, Carole Nelson Douglas, Saranne Dawson, Linnea Sinclair, and Tara K. Harper. So I have certain expectations when I read SFR. But since I’m a relative newcomer to Steampunk and Gaslight romances, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I opened MetalMark by author Ella Drake.

The hero of her story is a futuristic prince née figurehead named Lye, whose world, Brutus, is steam-powered. Known as Lye the Keeper, he’s under the parasitical thumb of the universe’s bad guys, The Syndicate. With Brutus under occupation by Syndicate overseers and his people enslaved with the insectoid MetalMarks, he’s left with no option but to give in to their demands and hope to help his people by way of a seat on the The Syndicate’s council.

In a very fun turn of events, help comes to the rescue in the form of one Jazzelina Eval, an infamous space pirate queen. Jazz makes a deal with a black marketeer to kidnap the handsome prince, but once she gets a look at him, she decides to keep him for herself.

Plenty of intrigue, romance, and swashbuckling futuristic derring-do, MetalMark rates high marks as a sexy and fun ebook.

Disclosure: While I did win this ebook in a contest, that doesn’t change my opinion of the skilled story craft of the author, or enjoyable nature of this novel.

Upcoming Non-Fiction

Sex & Love for Grownups : A No-Nonsense Guide to a Life of Passion
by Sallie Foley

Paperback: 160 pages, List Price:$7.95
Publisher: (AARP) Sterling;
Release date: (August 28, 2006)
ISBN: 1402740751

Written by Sallie Foley, the “Modern Love” columnist for AARP’s 22-million-subscriber lifestyle magazine, Sex & Love for Grownups offers candid insights on the romance and relationship issues uppermost in the minds of mature adults.

Now the most poignant and provocative questions sent to AARP The Magazine’s “Modern Love” column have been collected—and answered—in a new book, Sex & Love for Grownups, that reveals everything you always wanted to know about sex, love, and relationships at age 40 and beyond.

With recent behavioral surveys showing that healthy Americans stay sexually active into their 70s and up, this is the perfect forum to find out what others are thinking and doing about finding a new partner, making love, and making love last.

Some of the questioned answered in the book are:

Q: My husband wants me to talk dirty to him. Is there a book I can learn from?

Q: Our kids just left for college, and it’s created a stillness between my husband and me. How can we reconnect?

Q: My wife and I are in our 50s, and we have sex once a week, but it’s not enough for me. Is this normal?

Hmm, they never seem to ask the real burning questions, like:

Q: My husband keeps falling asleep during sex. Is now a good time to use a cattle prod? LOL

Q: I’ve been waiting for hubby to fix the toilet in the kids’ bathroom, but he never has time. But somehow, he did have time last week to fix our new sexy 20-something neighbor’s sink. Does this situation call for a cattle prod? :p

And finally,
Q: My husband suggested we try mock dating to spice up our sex life. He doesn’t call the next day or leave a message and he didn’t come home last weekend. He’s dating all right–just not me? NOW can I use the cattle prod?
